The key of this unique bolt securing system is the difference in angles. Any attempt of the bolt to rotate loose is blocked by the wedge action of the cams. The Nord-Lock® bolt securing system uses tension instead of friction to lock any bolt exposed to extreme vibrations and dynamic loads.

Nord-Lock® is a pair of washers with a wedge locking action meeting DIN 25 201. On one side the washers have cams with a greater rise than the pitch of the bolt. In addition, there are radial teeth on the opposing sides. The washers come pre-assembled in pairs cam face to cam face.

When the bolt and/or nut are tightened, the teeth grip and seat the mating surfaces. The washer is locked in place, allowing movement only across the face of the cams.

The picture shows what will happen when the bolt is turned loose with a wrench. The pair of washers expand more than the corresponding pitch of the thread allows the bolt to rise. This leads to an instant increase in clamp load. The wedge locking effect created makes the bolt/nut self-locking. The Nord-Lock® washers will secure joints exposed to transverse forces, different dynamic loads and/or vibration.
